Ladies English Bible Study meets every Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM.

Tricia Johnson, our Senior Pastor's wife, is our teacher.

Tricia grew up in a violent home where her abusive, alcoholic father ruled with guns and anger.  She was saved by God's grace the very first time she ever heard the Gospel of Jesus Christ, at the age of 18.  Her life was never the same!  God has given Tricia complete victory over her violent past and she is thrilled each time her past is used to help someone else overcome abuse.  She has taught workshops on Abuse Recovery at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College, Crown College and various Women's Ministry events. Her victory came exclusively through the Living Word of God and she is fully committed to inductive Bible study so that others can realize It's healing power.  She is a published author and regular writer for Regular Baptist Press.  She loves photography, scrapbooking, reading, baking and cooking.

From Tricia:  My greatest joy in life is that all 8 of my children know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior.  What a joy to come from such a place as I did, then fully realize the love and grace of Jesus Christ.....then be able to share that love, faith and grace with my children!  I am first an evangelist in their lives.

II Corinthians 1:4 "Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

The Book of Hebrews

Introduction - Lesson 1

1.      Who wrote the book of Hebrews?

a.      Vast knowledge of the OT indicates the author was likely Jewish

b.      The author was likely born and educated in the Greek-speaking world since the Septuagint is used in the writing.

c.       He or she had a broad vocabulary and powerful training in logic and rhetoric.

d.      It is likely that he/she was highly educated in the finest systems of that day.

e.      He/she had an architectural mind that was capable of organizing details to produce a well-structured argument.

f.        This author shaped the common Christian teaching to meet the needs of a group of people who desperately needed a message from God.   (Roger Hahn)

g.  The bottom line answers is:  We don't know who wrote Hebrews

2.      To whom was the book of Hebrews written? Because the title "The Epistle to the Hebrews" was added later and not part of the original manuscript, we do not know exactly who it was written to.  Most Bible scholars believe it was written to Jewish Christians.

3.      When was the book of Hebrews written?

a.      They had not yet resisted unto blood (12:4).

b.      The best known time of persecution was around A.D. 65, toward the end of Nero’s reign.  Nero was a prime suspect in the great fire that destroyed much of Rome in A.D. 64. He deflected attention off himself by publicly blaming Christians.

c.       The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem by Roman armies was not mentioned – this happened in A.D. 70

d.      Timothy had been released from prison, dating it after A.D. 50 (13:23)

4.      Where was it written? (13:24 mentions a location, but this is not conclusive evidence of where it was written.

5.      In what literary form is Hebrews written?  It is best described as a sermon or a theological dissertation since it is not a letter (no greeting nor letter form), it is not a book of poetry or history (although much history is contained within).
